How Cold Homes Affect Your Health

The quality of housing has a direct and significant impact on health, and for many patients across Cornwall, living in a cold or poorly insulated home remains a serious concern. With over 97,000 solid wall properties and 133,000 homes off the gas grid, the county's older housing stock can be particularly difficult to keep warm. Improving the thermal performance of a property, whether through wall insulation, draught-proofing or upgrading windows, is one of the most effective ways to protect against cold-related illness. Countries such as the Netherlands have developed detailed classification systems for window performance, and a Dutch guide to high-efficiency glazing standards provides a useful overview of how glazing is rated from basic through to the highest levels of thermal efficiency.

Research published by the Institute of Health Equity and commissioned by Friends of the Earth found that 9.6 million UK households are currently living in poorly insulated homes with incomes below the level needed for an acceptable standard of living. The NHS is estimated to spend around 1.4 billion pounds each year treating conditions linked to cold and damp housing, and the wider cost to society, including lost productivity and additional care needs, runs into the tens of billions.

The Benefits of Online GP Consultations

Over the past few years, online consultations have become an established part of how GP surgeries deliver care across the NHS. Stratton Docs offers an online consultation service that allows patients to submit their health concerns digitally, providing a convenient alternative to telephoning the surgery during busy periods. For many patients, this approach has made it easier to access the care they need at a time that suits them.

Online consultations are not intended to replace face-to-face appointments entirely. Instead, they offer an additional way for patients to get in touch with the clinical team, particularly for non-urgent matters or when a physical examination may not be necessary.

Understanding Repeat Prescriptions at Stratton Docs

For patients who take regular medication, understanding how repeat prescriptions work can help to ensure that there are no gaps in treatment. The team at Stratton Docs manages a large volume of repeat prescription requests each week, and having a clear process in place helps the practice to deliver a safe and efficient service to all patients.

A repeat prescription is a prescription for medication that a patient takes on an ongoing basis. Rather than needing a new consultation each time, the patient can request a further supply of their regular medication through the practice. The clinical team reviews these requests to ensure that each prescription remains appropriate and safe.

Making the Most of the NHS App

The NHS App has become an essential tool for patients across England, providing a convenient way to manage healthcare from a smartphone, tablet or computer. Stratton Docs encourages all registered patients to download and set up the app, which offers access to a growing range of services that were previously only available by contacting the surgery directly.

Since its launch, the NHS App has been continuously updated with new features and improvements. For patients at Stratton Docs, it provides a simple and secure way to handle many routine healthcare tasks without needing to phone the surgery or visit in person.

Staying Well During the Winter Months

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop across Cornwall, the winter season brings particular challenges for physical and mental health. Organisations such as Mind, the mental health charity, highlight that seasonal changes can have a significant effect on wellbeing, making it more important than ever to take proactive steps to stay healthy during the colder months. The team at Stratton Docs encourages all patients to take simple precautions that can make a real difference.

Winter illnesses tend to circulate more readily when people spend greater amounts of time indoors, and conditions such as colds, flu and norovirus become more common. For vulnerable groups, including older adults, young children and people with long-term conditions, these illnesses can develop into more serious complications if not addressed promptly.

How to Register as a New Patient at Stratton Docs

Registering with a GP surgery is one of the most important steps anyone can take for their health. Whether someone has recently moved to the Bude area, turned 18 and wants to register independently, or simply needs to find a new practice, the process at Stratton Docs is designed to be as straightforward as possible. The practice welcomes new patients from Stratton, Bude and the surrounding villages of north Cornwall.

Many people are unaware that registering with a GP surgery in England is completely free, and there is no requirement to show proof of address, identification documents or immigration status. While having an NHS number can make the process quicker, it is not essential. The practice can help locate existing medical records once registration has been completed.
